Apartment block committee plants the seed for CDS Vic fundraising

Residents of a Brunswick East apartment block have come up with a creative way to keep their communal rooftop garden looking good: their waste committee is using CDS Vic to help raise funds for garden maintenance.

Renee from the apartment block’s waste committee said that residents really appreciate having the rooftop garden and were keen to ensure that it could continue to be maintained for everyone’s enjoyment. The committee considered options for fundraising and hit upon the idea of using CDS Vic.

“Our thoughts were that even if people only had a few eligible containers to contribute, when you multiply that by the number of residents, it all adds up and it means we can use the money to help support our rooftop garden,” she said.

The waste committee set up a bin for eligible CDS Vic drink containers just outside the bin room and put out a call on the apartment’s Facebook group for residents to drop their empties in it, rather than putting them in the yellow recycling bin.

Renee said, “We put up a notice next to our bin room explaining what we were doing, along with a poster showing what type of drink containers are eligible to be returned for the 10 cent refund.

“We also keep a running tally board so that everyone can see how the fundraising is going, and we regularly post pictures in the Facebook group showing how the money from our refunds is being used to maintain the rooftop garden.”

The waste committee also looks after the container returns, so it’s as easy for residents as doing their normal recycling.

Thanks to their fundraising efforts, the apartment’s residents are now looking forward to summer BBQs in their well-maintained rooftop garden!
