When the Hamilton Bowling Club (HBC) first heard about CDS Vic, they immediately saw its potential for fundraising.
HBC was selected as a site to host a CDS Vic Reverse Vending Machine. The Club also registered as a CDS Vic Donation Partner and started its fundraising drive by calling on its members to ask if everyone could donate their eligible bottles and cans to the club, and to ask their friends and families to do the same.
TOMRA Cleanaway CEO, James Dorney, said, “A number of sites were initially identified to host the Hamilton refund point and the Hamilton Bowls Club was ultimately selected.
“Located close to the town centre, the HBC Reverse Vending Machine gives local residents a convenient and accessible location to drop off their eligible drink containers and earn their 10 cent refund. Community members looking to support the club can conveniently donate their containers to the HBC, or donate their refunds digitally via the CDS Vic West app.”
After just five months, the Club found it had already raised $3,000. "I don't like selling raffle tickets, as I end up having to buy the whole book myself!” joked Club member Russell Sherren. “It's just such an easy way to raise money."
The club is using the money raised for its new green and is even looking at putting in another green.
Club member, Peter Graham, acknowledged that there is time involved by Club members in collecting and processing the drink containers, but suggested that if you’ve got people at your club or organisation who are willing to help out, there are more than just financial benefits that can result from it.
"It's another way of getting together and having a coffee afterwards or getting more mateship through the people that you've got in your club - you're doing other things other than just bowling together. And it just works really well," he said.
