Roller derby team crushes its fundraising

In Bendigo, there’s a roller derby club crushing more than their opponents. Fans of this full-contact sport have brought the same enthusiasm to their recycling through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme.

Dragon City Roller Derby has so far raised more than $1700 to support members to compete in interstate tournaments, while also helping to reduce litter.

“I’m always on the lookout for ‘10 cents’ wherever I go,” said Miranda Brewer aka 'Bareskin Bruiser'.

“I grab containers from work, bring a bin along to home games and events, and I’ve even been known to embarrass a few teammates by collecting cans at the pub! If I'm walking around town, or in the bush, I usually carry a bag and pick up as I go. It benefits the environment too.

“We are a relatively small club, but our sport requires a great deal of travel across the state and even interstate. We don’t want club members to bear the high costs of travel on top of maintaining their own gear and the costs of venue hire for training.”

The keen recycler returns drink containers to the CDS Vic depot at Wellsford Drive, East Bendigo, around every fortnight, and encouraged other sporting clubs and community groups to get involved.

“It’s basically free money,” Miranda said. “It doesn’t take much effort, and every dollar — or in this case, every 10 cents — counts.”

To support Dragon City Roller Derby, return your eligible drink containers at a CDS Vic refund point and select the charity as your payout option.
