2 billion containers returned

background hero image

Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme has passed a massive milestone, with two billion containers returned since the scheme launched in November 2023. Considering it took a year to hit the first billion, and this second one has taken eight months, we’re feeling very positive.

This figure shows just how much Victorians have embraced the scheme, so congratulations go out to the entire state. If you’ve returned your containers, we’d like to thank you for being part of the change. That’s two billion containers kept out of landfill and out of our beautiful parks, beaches, rivers, and mountains. It’s something to celebrate.

With that in mind, we thought we’d do some quick maths to show just how big of an impact we’ve had together. In terms of total volume, two billion eligible drink containers would fill…

  • 91 per cent of the Melbourne Cricket Ground
  • 1600 Giant Koalas
  • 4500 Z-class trams
  • 575 Olympic swimming pools

Incredible work. Here’s to the next billion, and to all of you.
